Experience

My first experience with tutoring was while I Was still in high school, I helped other students study for exams in physics and chemistry. After that, I took some time between years in university and volunteered to teach English at LHA charitable trust in Dharamsala, India. After graduating from CU in 2012, I started formally working in education while living in Japan. I worked in both public and private schools, as well as serving private clients as a tutor. In 2014 I obtained my N2 level on the national Japanese Language Proficiency test, allowing me to start working as a translator and eventually as an interpreter. I left Japan to attend a graduate program at the Central European University and then joined the US Peace Corps, volunteering as an English Literacy Resource Advisor on the island of Upolu in Samoa. There, I taught small groups of at-risk elementary students, focusing on the reading and writing skills that they would need to succeed in higher levels of their education. I will always remember the joy of students who thought they couldn't read as they came into the library to borrow books to read to their parents. After returning from Peace Corps service, I moved back to Japan and worked as a teacher at a private school until I was contracted to set up a Japanese branch of an American company and localize their products. As the pandemic spread to the US, I eventually decided to return and be with my family here. Education has remained at the core of my life in each phase. I believe that it is foundational for our culture and personal well-being to become empowered with the tools and passion we need to become self-educators. I work to connect subject material to relevant parts of student's lives and animate the learning process with techniques that will make the material memorable, accessible, and engaging.
